    FAQ

    Good to know

    Is Wrist Match free?

Yes. When you buy through our Amazon links we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

What does the match score mean?

It adds up how many of your 8 answers a watch fits: style, budget, movement, dial color, size, strap, origin and water resistance. Commissions never change the score.

    Are prices and specs exact?

They are approximate and can vary by version and seller. Always check the Amazon listing before buying.

    Guide

How to choose your first watch

    1. Decide when you'll wear it

Daily, office, sport or special occasions? A casual watch and a dress watch are very different purchases.

    2. Pick a size

Between 38 and 41 mm fits most wrists. Go smaller for slim wrists and larger if you like a bold look.

    3. Choose the movement

Quartz is accurate and low maintenance. Automatic is mechanical and wound by your wrist. Manual is hand-wound. Solar charges from light.

    4. Check water resistance

3 ATM handles splashes, 5 ATM rain, 10 ATM swimming, 20 ATM or more diving. It is not a guarantee against all water.

    5. Set a budget

Excellent watches exist at every price. Spend what feels comfortable, then compare a few options instead of buying the first one.

    Before you buy

    Automatic, manual or quartz

An automatic is wound by the motion of your wrist; a manual needs winding by hand; quartz runs on a battery and is the most accurate and cheapest to maintain. Solar (Eco-Drive) charges from light.

    What do ATM ratings mean?

3 ATM handles splashes; 5 ATM rain and hand-washing; 10 ATM swimming; 20 ATM or more, recreational diving.

    Case size and wrist

Up to 37 mm suits slim wrists; 38–41 mm is the most versatile range; 42 mm or more gives a sporty, robust look.

    Spring Drive

Grand Seiko technology that blends a mechanical mainspring with electronic regulation: a seconds hand that glides smoothly, with excellent accuracy.

Tissot PRX vs PRX Powermatic 80

    Updated October 31, 2026 · approximate retail prices, checked October 18, 2026–October 19, 2026 · How we compare

The PRX quartz and the PRX Powermatic 80 share the same 40 mm steel case with an integrated bracelet, inspired by a 1978 Tissot design. From across the room they look the same.

The real difference is inside. The quartz runs on a battery and is extremely accurate. The Powermatic 80 is a mechanical automatic that winds itself as you wear it; the “80” refers to its power reserve of up to 80 hours, so it keeps running over a weekend off the wrist. It also costs well over the quartz version.

    Which one should you pick?

    Our verdict

If you mainly love the design, the quartz PRX gives you almost all of it for a lot less. If what draws you to watches is the mechanism, the Powermatic 80 is the one you’ll still be happy with in five years.

    Tissot PRX · ≈ $410

    What’s good

    • Quartz: very accurate and low maintenance
    • 100 m water resistance: fine for swimming
    • Sapphire crystal: very hard to scratch
    • Quick-release straps: easy to change

    Keep in mind

    Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 · ≈ $725

    What’s good

    • Automatic: no battery, it winds itself as you wear it
    • 100 m water resistance: fine for swimming

    Keep in mind

    • Less accurate than quartz, and it stops if you don’t wear it for a day or two

    Frequently asked questions

Do the two PRX models look different?

Very little. Both have a 40 mm steel case with an integrated bracelet and 10 ATM water resistance. The automatic has a seconds hand that sweeps instead of ticking once per second.

Is the Powermatic 80 worth the extra money?

Only if you value the mechanical movement. Timekeeping-wise the quartz is more accurate; you pay extra for the craftsmanship and for never changing a battery.

Can I swim with the Tissot PRX?

Both are rated 10 ATM (100 m), which is fine for swimming. Neither is a diving watch.
